Ghosts is probably the sappiest breakup song I’ve written since I was a teenager. The song is more specifically about how two people with tons of history have to end up breaking things off clean, pretending the other half of the relationship is dead for their own sanity. I had originally written this song with FRENCHGIRLS, a band I had been in for around 5 years with my childhood best friends, and recorded a lot of it with them as we started the downward spiral into our eventual band breakup. A lot of the original lyrics of “Ghosts” ended up sharing parallels with that situation and became a lot more of a meaningful song to me than when I had first written it. The drum tracks and guitar tracks I ripped from our last recording session together, which gave the whole production process a weird sort of lamenting feeling. It felt kind of like going through old family photos, which I feel was translated through the rest of the song when I recorded the vocals about a year later.
